Effects of a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program for Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a pulmonary rehabilitation program for inpatients with COPD.

Method: A experimental design was used. The subjects of this study were 21 COPD inpatients(Exp. group; 11,
Cont. group; 10) at the K medical center. The subjects of experimental group were participated Pulmonary rehabilitation
program for 6 weeks. The program consisted of education on COPD, breathing exercise, upper-extremity exercise using
by Thera-band. and its outcomes have been evaluated on O2 saturation, subjective dyspnea, comfort, sleep satisfaction,
fatigue. The obtained data were analyzed by using the Mann-Whitney U test of SPSS.

Result: The degree of O2 saturation, comfort and sleep satisfaction of experimental group was significantly higher than the control group. The degree of subjective dyspnea, fatigue of experimental group was significantly lower than the control group.

Conclusion: Program is effective in improving pulmonary function and comfort. Therefore this program could be implemented it as pulmonary rehabilitation program for the COPD patients.
